The Chambers HNW 2020 rankings have been released and once again chambers have been ranked as leaders in Tax: Private Client.
The commentary notes that Old Square Tax Chambers have “some extremely good practitioners” who handle advisory and contentious tax matters for private clients. An instructing solicitor remarks: “They are a very good set; they are full of extremely good people with a lot of talent. I have no problem referring work to them.”
Our clerks have also been commended: “the clerks are very flexible, and they appreciate the client’s demands and they are receptive.” The interviewee adds: “They are very helpful and have managed tricky things for us.”
Individual members James Kessler QC, Rory Mullan and Harriet Brown have also been individually ranked.
James Kessler QC is “the leading expert in foreign domiciliary work,” states an interviewee, continuing: “He wrote the best book in the world. He is very well regarded and has a niche in charity tax.” Several sources comment on his depth of highly technical knowledge, with one saying: “If I ever get stuck on offshore matters, his book is my first port of call. He is brilliant.”
Rory Mullan focuses his practice on tax matters, including domicile and residence and offshore tax work. “He is incredibly bright and a real fighter for his clients. He is the best senior junior at the tax Bar,” states a fellow barrister, adding: “He has a strategic nose and incredible intellectual rigour; he really stands out.” One instructing solicitor enthuses: “Rory provides an absolutely superb service, I would never go anywhere else for tax advice. His advice is insightful as well as practical, and Rory never fails to go the extra mile for his clients.”
Harriet Brown is well known at the Bar, particularly for her dual qualification as a Jersey advocate. One source notes: “Harriet is a Jersey advocate and this gives her an extra area of expertise. She is really good and very knowledgeable.” An instructing solicitor comments: “She is extremely thorough and good value. She is a delight to work with, very clear in her advice and she can handle complex matters extremely well.”
