Robert Venables QC – A Signal Honour

Robert Venables Q.C. has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of the College of St Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, joining an elite body of distinguished individuals.

Other Honorary Fellows in the legal field include Sir Keir Starmer, David Gauke (Lord Chancellor until 2019), Salman Khurshid (former Minister for Law and Justice of India, who was taught by Robert), Sir Stanley Burnton (a former judge of the Court of Appeal), her Hon. Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth, Lady Justice Sarah Asplin and Lord (Kenneth) Macdonald Q.C.

Honorary Fellows outside the law include distinguished economists, academics, writers and artists, as well as General Sir Michael Rose.

St Edmund Hall is one of Oxford University’s oldest institutions, dating from 1247. Robert was a full-time Official Fellow and Tutor at the Hall from 1975-80 and had been a Fellow by Special Election (non-executive) from 1992 – 2020. It is believed that the only other former Fellow of the Hall who is now an Honorary Fellow is Lord Oxburgh, a former colleague of Robert’s and later Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell.
